Chateau Ste. Michelle Maintenance Supervisor Michael Weeks reports that the Logix system lowered condenser pressure, regulated the tank cooling load, and allowed him to raise the suction temperature by 10 to 12 degrees F. Compressor horsepower requirements can frequently be halved, resulting in substantial energy savings.
The system eliminates many routine system checks previously done individually by the staff. For example, they no longer need to walk around recording the temperature in each of the winery's 120 tanks.
Trend logging and reporting helps winery staff learn from past procedures, fine-tune operations and repeat successes. The winery is now better able to achieve consistent, high-quality results.
The Logix system alerts winery staff via a telephone voice annunciator, email, and pager in the event of refrigeration shutdown. This allows engine room and winemaking staff to restart important systems immediately with a home personal computer.
Prior to installing a Logix Winery Control System, winemakers would spend long hours during crush monitoring pressures and temperatures, assessing plant capacity to provide the required cooling for fermentation. The Logix system allows automatic operation of the refrigeration system at near optimal efficiency.
The alarm system proved itself to be of particular value during a recent crush, when on two different occasions the refrigeration system shut down during the middle of the night. In each case, the Logix system alerted a staff member at home who quickly restarted the system.
